About CoopCrow

Backyard keepers and homesteaders who got tired of recycled listicles – and started writing the reviews we wished existed.

CoopCrow started the way most good homesteading projects do – with a problem in the backyard and not enough good advice to solve it. We're a small team of backyard poultry keepers, hobby farmers, and homesteaders who got tired of sorting through recycled product listicles to figure out which coop heater wouldn't burn down a henhouse, or which incubator actually held a steady temperature through a Midwest cold snap.

How CoopCrow Got Started

CoopCrow was founded in 2021 by Maren Ellison, a lifelong gardener and seven-year backyard chicken keeper who started raising Orpingtons and Australorps on a quarter-acre lot outside Bozeman, Montana. After replacing three different waterers in a single winter – two of which froze solid and one of which leaked into the bedding – Maren started keeping detailed notes comparing feeders, waterers, coop designs, and predator-proofing hardware. Friends in the local 4-H chapter and a regional homesteading Facebook group started asking for those notes directly, and CoopCrow grew out of that spreadsheet.

Today the site is run by a small, hands-on team that includes a retired poultry veterinarian who reviews our health and brooding content, a homesteader raising meat birds and dairy goats in East Tennessee, and a few contributing writers who keep flocks ranging from three backyard hens to a 40-bird rotational setup. None of us write about products we haven't actually used with our own animals.

How We Review Products

We built our review process around one rule: if it hasn't touched a coop, a brooder, or a barn, we don't recommend it. Our evaluation process includes:

  • Hands-on testing. Coops, incubators, heat plates, feeders, and waterers are assembled and used in real conditions – through heat waves, freezing nights, and everything a flock can throw at them.
  • Durability over time. We revisit products after weeks or months of use, not just an unboxing, to see how plastic holds up to pecking, how hardware rusts, and how automatic doors perform after repeated cycles.
  • Safety first. Anything involving heat, electricity, or enclosed spaces (heat lamps, heated waterers, automatic coop doors) is checked against known fire and predator-entry risks before it ever gets a recommendation.
  • Flock-size and climate context. A coop that works for three hens in Georgia may fail for a dozen hens in Minnesota. We test across different flock sizes and note climate-specific caveats in every review.
  • Price-to-value comparison. We compare similar products across price tiers so budget-conscious keepers and those building a premium setup both get honest guidance.
  • Reader feedback loop. We read every comment and email about product failures or surprises and use that information to update older reviews, not just publish new ones.

What Makes CoopCrow Trustworthy

We don't accept payment for positive reviews, and we don't let manufacturers preview or approve our write-ups before publication. When we use affiliate links, it's clearly disclosed, and it never determines which product wins a comparison – our testing notes do. If a product underperforms, we say so plainly, even if it's from a brand we've recommended before.

We also believe context matters more than a star rating. A heat lamp alternative that's perfect for a drafty Vermont barn might be overkill for a well-insulated coop in Arizona, so our reviews are written to help you match a product to your actual setup, not just to crown a single "best" pick.

Our Promise to Readers

CoopCrow exists because we'd rather spend an afternoon testing a sketchy predator latch ourselves than let you find out the hard way. Every review, buying guide, and comparison on this site is written by someone who has fed, watered, and cared for real birds and real animals, and who understands that a bad product recommendation can mean a lost flock, not just a wasted purchase.

If you have a question about a product, a coop setup, or something we got wrong, reach out. We update our reviews regularly, and reader experience is one of the biggest reasons we revise our recommendations.
